Inside Scientology/Dianetics
How I Joined Dianetics/Scientology and Became Superhuman
By Robert Kaufman

Robert Kaufman died of cancer on 29 July 1996. During the final years of his life, Robert Kaufman revised the manuscript of his book, Inside Scientology (published in 1972), but could not sell it to a publisher. In late 1995, with his health failing, he gave a copy of the WordPerfect files to Keith Spurgeon <spurgeon@is2.nyu.edu> for distribution on the Internet.

In August 1996, Keith emailed the files (which are in somewhat haphazard form) to Dean Benjamin <drb@cs.cmu.edu>, who edited the manuscript and formatted it for the World Wide Web in November 1997.

R.I.P. Jett Travolta

http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2009/01/what-killed-jet.html

John Travolta's son died of what has been reported as a seizure. Judging from the fact that the 16-year-old boy had a 24/7 nanny and a baby monitor by his side, I would suspect an ongoing mental/chemical disorder. And then further wonder if perhaps John's choice of religion prohibited any treatment of that disorder. Which then led to a final, fatal seizure.

First Isaac Hayes, then Jett Travolta. And these are only the famous faces.

Scientology on trial for "organized fraud" in France

Believe what you want in your own mind, but when you're defrauding people and charging insane amounts of money for what is essentially unproven theories, you're liable for litigation.  Bonne chance, French courts!

The Death of L. Ron

http://exscn.net/content/view/184/98/
"The Church of Scientology is loudly voicing their strong resistance to what they call "psych drugs". It is therefore ironic that the founder of Dianetics and Scientology, L Ron Hubbard, was taking a "psych drug" when he died. This is not unusual in itself, since bitter old men often go psychotic when dying. Witnesses testified that Hubbard died acting like a raving lunatic. "

"L Ron Hubbard was given Vistaril® by Dr. Gene Denk in his final days, by intramuscular injection in the right buttocks. Vistaril® is a psychiatric drug, used to calm frantic or overly anxious patients."

Plus the coroner's report!

The Marcab Confederacy

These are part of the Saint Hill Special Briefing Course, which is very long and costs over $25,000.
And then the materials for the course add up to over $18,000.

"You see, we might very well be part and parcel to the Fifth Invaders
conquering Earth, you see. We might be a secret adjunct of the space
command which is really interrupting everything. We might be this and
we might be that. There's every reason why we might well have been
part of the Marcab Confederacy, don't you see, as an extensional arm
of invasion on Earth. There's every reason. Because this is a
timetable on which Earth is operating right at the present moment."

QUESTION AND ANSWER PERIOD: STATES OF BEINGNESS
A lecture given on
27 September 1961

-----

"Now, in the Marcab Confederacy a racing car was a turbine - driven job
and they went on for thousands of years. I think there was ten or
twelve thousand years. They always had the same race ears, same races,
everything. They didn’t believe in progress. And they went about two
hundred and seventy - five miles an hour according to our present
standards. They went at a high whine. And they used to have
casualties. Those things would go into a brick wall or one of the
concrete ramparts or something like that, and they’d have a casualty.
They’d have to take the pilot out and take him to the hospital tent.
See, take the driver out of that and take him to the hospital tent to
patch him up.

Now, that is within the last forty thousand years. You get how rapidly
one’s concept of mass can deteriorate. Because - I mention that
because some of you have got Marcab on your tracks. A lot of you
people run into bits and pieces of the racetracks of Marcab. Well,
take a look at it - at how much force, you see? Two hundred and
seventy - five miles an hour in a turbine - driven car hitting a
concrete wall and having to go to the hospital tent. Hundred and ten
miles an hour - caroming off of a brick wall or a fence and getting
buried. That’s different ideas. See, it’s a deterioration of the idea
of force.

Now, that doesn’t say that the thetan sometimes miraculously suddenly
can’t regain his older ideas of how much force he can tolerate. But,
it does say that on the average there’s a general deterioration. So
when you ask a thetan to go on the earliest track, find his goal, be
right there at the point of his goal. “All right, now you see that,
now just change your mind. Thank you,” and it blows the whole bank -
you see now why that doesn’t work? See, you’ve asked him to go and
climb in to a five hundred mile an hour racing car, hit a concrete
wall and live. That’s the way it looks to him. He says, “What! Ha -
ha! Ho - ho! You silly? You must think I’m stupid!”"

Am i back off the Sci-wagon?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elli_Perkins
This Scientologist mom refused to give her son anti-psychotic medication (he was diagnosed as schizophrenic in 2001) because she believed (as all Scientologists do) that psychology is evil and detrimental to one's health.  They consulted a doctor, also a Scientologist, who declared that "he was suffering from certain digestive problems, that he had certain chemical toxins in his body. And he needed to be purged of it. And he needed to be energized through vitamin therapy."
In March 2003,  he stabbed his mother 77 times with a steak knife.  He was found not responsible by reason of mental disease or defect.
In January 2004, the NY State Office of Mental Health declared him "Dangerously Mentally Ill" and had him committed.

"Scientology is just a silly religion.  How could it possibly hurt people? Why are you so bent out of shape about it?"

Get Up The Bridge!

Letter to all Scientologists on 9/11.

-------
"What should we do?"
...Get up The Bridge...It does matter that you take a course. Putting it off until later, or fitting it in two hours a week, in between other ''interesting" activities, will not do. Your future as a being is at stake. So is the future of those your love and the world at large.
...
What would you have thought if rescue workers in New York City stood to the side of the road waiting for other rescue workers to arrive at the scene? ... Well, we have a planet to salvage. And until we do, you are looking at entire populations stuck in the trap forever. The only way they can get out of the trap is by traveling The Bridge.

"Traveling The Bridge" equates to almost four hundred thousand dollars. :-\

Why Are They Dead

Scientology is a silly 'religion'.  They believe in alien overlords, space planes that look like DC-8s, invisible alien souls attached to your body, and the fact that this universe is an illusion.
Yeah, goofy.

But that's not what Scientology's detractors are upset about.  They're upset about the control that the organization exercises over its followers and the way it can crush people's souls, even to the point of suicide.  They're upset about the negligent and not-so-negligent deaths that have happened to its members.  These are the real crimes of Scientology, and the reason so many people are against the organization.

Hubbard's de-evolution

Wow!

http://partyvan.info/index.php/Project_Chanology

There are three orders of Scientologists.

The third order is the believer. They are the followers, the quiet believers, the ones on whom the Church relies on for its income. While they are indeed foolish or susceptible to trickery, they are not to be hated. They are to be pitied, and to be saved. Our mission is to free them from the shackles of their blindness. They are but the lambs gone astray; in the promises of Scientology, they have sought a new and improved life. They are being lured over the dark precipice, and we must rescue them from that brink before they cross it and fall into darkness forever.

The second order is the zealot. They are the spokespeople, the loud, abrasive megaphones through which the siren song of this cult blares. This is both the celebrity figureheads of the group, and its middle-lower management. They are to be fought, but with measured restraint. While active agents of this monstrous mockery of faith, they too are believers at heart. They must be defeated, but shown the light as well. For most in this category, there is hope, and we must not forsake them; there is still a chance they may see truth through unclouded eyes once more.

The first order is the overseer. They are the masterminds, the silent power structure through which their second order acts. These are the madmen on the ocean yacht, the proud financiers of mercenary legal teams, and the shrewd conspirators whose pockets are lined with the spoils of the Church’s lies. While the zealots shall be the ones we face upon the battlefield, they are but pawns of this highest division of vile swine. We must defeat their front ranks of indoctrinated pawns, but when at last we reach these foes we must cut them down without mercy.

If you can glean any real information from this, you're a better man than I am, Gunga Din. I thought being an upper-level Scientologist was supposed to increase your communication skills greatly.

The Lame

"If an auditor must address a psychosomatic illness, it is only necessary for him to ask: "How do your (legs, hands, eyes) seem to you now?" using one of them at a time. The lame can walk simply if asked: "How do your legs seem to you now?" enough times. "

"The practicality of Pan- Determinism is immediately seen in an elementary, if uncommon, situation where one is being robbed. If one continues to be solely one's self, the determinism of the robber is left entirely free. The way to combat a robber is, while one is being robbed, be the robber, and go away. "

Hubbard's de-evolution

Oh, how that Hubbard can write.

"Theta clearing is about as practical and simple as repairing a shoe-lace. It is nothing to do with hypnotism, voodooism, charlatanism, monkeyism or theosophy. Done, the thetan can do anything a stage magician can do in the way of moving objects around. But this isn't attained by holding one's breath or thinking "right" thoughts or voting Republican or any other superstitious or mystic practice. So, which is the reason I've brought it up, rule out, auditor, any mumbo-jumbo of mysticism or spiritualism or religion. Rule out anything but good, solid, contactable incidents which are run wholly and entirely with the mechanical techniques of Dianetics with particular attention to 80."
-- L. Ron Hubbard, A History of Man

I believe the last two sentences are my favorite of all time.   I love how he's ruling out the "mumbo-jumbo of...religion".  And the crazy amount of commas.  You can really tell which part of the book are written and which are transcribed from LRH's spoken notes.

Hubbard's de-evolution

Ha ha ha ha - "unfair to tomorrow"

"The capabilities of the theta being cannot at this time be set down in a full sweep of data. In the first place, it would be unfair to tomorrow to detail in writing the exact constitution of a theta being, for by just that much could he be predicted and brought again into a low state."
-- L. Ron Hubbard, A History Of Man

Ha ha - what a coincidental reason for not showing your whole hand! Weird!

Some of the powers of YOU, the theta being (all from A History of Man by L. Ron Hubbard)
"A theta being produces considerable voltage and amperage, enough to give somebody a very bad shock, to put out his eyes or cut him in half."

"The theta being, on his own, can instill anything on the emotional range into another being for each emotion is a wave length and wave characteristic."

"A theta being can be made visible by certain electronic flows; he can be pinned down by certain flows. The wave lengths of these flows are not known to homo sapiens at this time and methods of emission of them have not been invented on Earth."

This last one is useful to explain why these all-powerful beings could be captured by the evil prince Xenu onto strips of tape and then exploded with H-Bombs in volcanos.

"Thetans communicate by telepathy. They can move material objects by throwing an energy flow at them. They can travel at very high speeds. They are not bound by atmospheres or temperatures."

"A thetan, brought low enough to have a MEST body, may consider that he has been trapped by "time warps" or that his universe is another dimension or some such thing. This is not the case."

And this one seems to be a bit at odds with the earlier claim in Science of Survival:
"Let us call this life energy by a symbol in order to identify it. We will assign to it the Greek letter theta and distinguish it as an energy existing separate and distinct from the physical universe as we know it.
The physical universe would be the universe of matter, energy, space and time. It would be the universe of the planets, their rocks, rivers, and oceans, the universe of stars and galaxies, the universe of burning suns and time. In this universe we would not include theta as an integral portion, although theta obviously impinges upon it as life." (emphasis mine)

Seriously.
Hubbard's de-evolution

Is this Manicheanism?

"This universe is a rough universe. It is a terrible and deadly universe. Only the strong survive it, only the ruthless can own it. Given one weak spot a being cannot long endure it for this universe will search it out and enlarge it and fester and probe it until that weak spot is a festering wound so large that the being is engulfed by his own sores."
-- L. Ron Hubbard, A History Of Man

I remember reading about a philosophy that considers this universe to be basically evil, created by the "bad god", and that we are poor souls subjected to it.  Is that gnosticism?  [info]andrewhickey?

Hubbard's de-evolution

Kind of a rationale

It's hard to really describe how Scientology can ruin lives if people join freely. Kind of like the battered wife who keeps getting asked "who don't you just leave". I know that I get obsessive about it periodically, and my friends tend to say "what's the big deal?", meaning that they're just a kooky religion, aren't there other things to worry about? I think that that attitude is what helps the church keep on doing what it's doing. The majority of people just know it as that nutty religion that Tom Cruise and John Travolta belong to. Not a lot of talk about how celebrities may not be dealt with the same as regular people who are just as desperate and self-doubting.

Here's the text of the Time Magazine article that presents one family's story.
